Activity Bombed

Well, we just had a big groups of kids come in and spend the afternoon with us. they are highschool kids who are looking to go into the medical field. They come to us every summer, and the participate in an event that we plan. Well, this year we did a carnival and had a bunch of games for the residents to participate in. All the games had prizes. Well, the first half hour went great. The kids were working with the residents, and the residents were having fun. Once we introduced the food....corn dogs & popcorn, the residents didn't want to do anything else. They ate, and then they left. As they were leaving, they were saying that the only reason they came was for the corn dogs. *sigh* All that planning and work put into the event, and they wanted no part of it. Well needless to say, there was an hour and a half left with the kids, and I was stuck. I guess it goes to show, no matter how well planned you feel the event is, there is always something that can go wrong.

Oh well.

Have a good weekend all.

Hi Stacy,

You noticed that they were all having a good time at the party.I'm sure you did a great job and they all appreciated your hard work. Do you work with senior citizens? They are sometimes like little kids and get all excited when they see food they usually don't eat. They also say things they don't mean too. I'm sure if you asked them if they had a good time the next day they would say yes.If you took pictures it will bring back enjoyable memories to them. Don't ever give up and always do your best others will notice.

Stacy, I am so sorry!

This has happened on occasion with me as well.

Ideas that we think the residents would enjoy and participate in are of no interest to the residents!

Sorry this happened!

Don't let it get you down!

Did the students get to do any other visiting while there?

Also, what about the length of time? I have found that almost no activities work well that last over an hour! You said they were having fun for a half hour, ate, then left! My residents get really tired after about an hour. Plus they have to use the restroom, etc.

Whats important is that the volunteers know they were appreciated! As long as they understand that the hour they spent was important, thats what mattered! Any time at all makes a difference!

I understand how that feels though--its terrible when things don't go as planned. But, you live and learn! Better luck in the future

Hey Stacey :-) ,

Sorry to hear about your day :-( ! I know that we all take it personally when something we think is going to fly bombs! Believe me in my 20 years in the buss. I've had plenty of bombs too! Just put it in the past and move on to better and happier times !!

Have fun! gina :-D

Stacy,

I am sorry that you were bummed by the evacuation. But, you also need to look at a few other things, hopefully they will brighten your outlook.

1) You pulled off an event and you learned what your residents like....food.

2) You may have influenced someone to work in the field.

3) You got residents involve, even if it was a short time.

4) You tried......

Remember, sometimes things don't go over the way we want. Sometimes we don't have perfect events. You need to feel good becuase you tried and you learned. I hate to sound cheesy, but you'll get 'em next time!!!
