Sheryl 0 Report Share Posted November 30, 2006 ATTENTION!! The latest news about the MDS 3.0. IMPORATNT!! By: Bonnie Ruggles-Ruechel BS, ACC Data: MDS 3.0 developers are focusing on ways to streamline the MDS and make it less complicated and burdensome. They are also looking at making it more relevant to the long term care population and consistent with current practice. So far they have suggested 18 changes. The developers are suggesting that activities be place under Section F: Customary and Routine and Activities (this entire section was reworked to include quality of life element). Recommendations include assessment questions to the resident like, “While you are here in the nursing home, how important is it to you to listen to music you like?” All proposed changes will be tested and changes will occur as a result of validation and inter-rater reliability testing. Validation testing was to begin in July 2006. Scheduled completion of MDS 3.0 is December 2007. Once the completed tool is received by CMS, it will take the required steps for public release. Mid-to-late 2008 is the anticipated date for this tool. NAAP will be watching and will keep NAAP members abreast of MDS 3.0 happenings. STRIVE TIME AND RESOURCE INTENSITY VERIFICATION (STRIVE) This is the first study of this kind since 1997. The study will collect staff time and resident level clinical data regarding health status, medical conditions, services received, and facility resources used to provide care from a large sample of nursing homes. The data collected will be used to update the Prospective Payment System (PPS) by reconstructing the relative weight table, including nine new resources Utilization Group (RUG) categories on which Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement are based.. Information about activities will be collected by STRIVE. Watch for updates. Source TheNAAP.com
