douglash26 1 Report Share Posted March 18, 2006 I work in an ALF and SNF and the ALF allows pets...one of our residents owns a small dog and the other residents love her. She comes to many of our activities and the residents are always petting her, talking to her. etc. Of course not everyone would like this so you have to look at your population. Hope this helps. Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 Hi, I work in an ALF. We HAD two tiny poodles in the facility. Each resident was responsible for walking and caring for their dogs. Guest Tiff Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 The community I am at, we arfe required to have a cat and dog that has free range of the building. It is not without challenges but I love it. I am a big animal lover so I like coming to work and having the dog greet me. Sometimes staff will bring their pets as well. Mine are too roudy to bring. We have a couple who used to live in AL who has a cat, they have recently moved to our Memory Care area and the cat has made her self at home up there and just roams around and teh residents enjoy her. They enjoy all of the pets. We get the usual complaints and it is trial and error on getting a pet that fits in but I think we have them now. The one thing I do not like is if a pet does not fit in, out they go. I am a big believer that when you take on a pet, you have them and are responsible for them for THIER lifespan...so this does not sit well with me. Fortunatly, the three that had to go were taken in by staff. The dog is used a lot to help ease agitated residents. We actually do an "interview process" for each pet we consider adopting. The interview process consists of a 30 day trial where the pet lives in the nursing home. During that time we monitor to see how the pet reacts to the sounds, smells, activities, etc of the nursing home. We will try things such as petting the dog the wrong direction etc to see how they respond. If everything goes well, they move in...if not we give back to the donor. It could very easily get lost, and because of our open floor plan, it could never avoid being in the kitchen areas. I do have families who bring their dogs regularly. One of my volunteers brings his Golden Retriever in every week, she is really a sweet animal. I also have had staff members bring in kittens and puppies. My favorite animal visit was from the exotic pet people who brought in tarantulas, owls, and a prairie dog (I'm sure that is illegal in my state, but oh well) They came about 3 years ago, I should have them come again. phxville 0 Report Share Posted March 22, 2006 We have a facility cat, Boots. The residents and staff alike LOVE her! I work in a fairly large facility as well but Boots runs the place. Everyone calls her the boss. My first day of work here, I called the elevator and when the doors opened up there was Boots. She waited until she got to the floor she wanted to go to and then walked right off of the elevator like she owned the place. That gave me a good laugh. She has food, water and several different beds on each floor and she knows just where to find them. Guest Tiff Report Share Posted March 26, 2006 Our animals have their own budget...and I think we have gone over what was allowed every month. It really is not enough to properly take care of the animals. Maybe enough for the puppy's spa visits...LOL. We had 2 unplanned vet visits this month and the puppy's alone was about 200.00. The kitty was declawed and spayed (not really unexpected for her but it was not in the budget) I am not sure what that cost. I really think the budget that is allowed for our pets is for the normal everyday things, like food and shots and such....because you really can not know what will come up.
